“Hey Honey, Do We Have Any Greeting Cards?”

How many times have you heard that phrase in your house. You just remembered it’s your friend’s birthday in a few days time or sadly somebody close to you has passed away and you want to send your heartfelt thoughts to a loved one.

But there’s no card in the house. You sigh as you think to yourself “I guess I’ll have to go to the card shop and buy one”.

Which means jumping into the car, driving to the nearest card shop, parking the car and going inside the store. Once inside you find the card stand which normally doesn’t have a lot of choice and you begin your search. Hmmmmmmm.

You start sorting through the cards by reading the messages inside. Some are short and sweet while others go on and on. WOW this exercise is starting to take some time. You decide upon a card even though it’s not exactly the one you want. The alternative is to drive to another store and repeat the same exercise and there’s no guarantee you’ll find the card of your choice there either.

As you move towards the shop counter you flip the card over to discover it’s going to cost you $5.95 – and you don’t really like it. Begrudgingly you hand over your money as you start to question in your mind “Is George really worth $5.95″ or ” I didn’t know Aunt Gloria that well”; but you proceed anyway.

Thirty minutes has now passed and you return to your car. Searching the glove box and under every seat you find your best BIC pen. The ink is a little hard and you leave a few scratches on your card as you attempt to get the ink to flow while you are writing. Your message is short and sweet. Gosh you’ve been here for 45 minutes and the clock is ticking.

You reverse out of the lot and head towards the post office. Traffic is at a crawl and you wish you had never remembered George’s birthday or Aunt Gloria’s passing. But you soldier on.

You arrive to the post office and there’s a que onto the street. By now an hour has passed and you really are seriously thinking about throwing in the towel. You join the que and after listening to the 5 numb skulls in front of you whinge and whine about everything from the weather to the cost of bananas, you make it to the counter – to buy just one lousy stamp!

You bash the stamp onto the envelope. It’s a little stress reliever as this exercise has now cost you one hour 20 minutes. And you’ve still got to put the card into the mailbox and drive home in the crawling traffic.
