It is no secret that making custom greeting cards is getting a little bit harder, especially when it comes to designs. With so many new effects and “gimmicks” in greeting card printing, it is actually hard to think of something original or remarkable for custom greeting cards. Most professionals have a hard time in this as well, so don’t worry. If you are having the same problem, it is normal for all of us.
With that said though, there is still hope for us. Getting remarkable custom greeting cards is not just about getting the right idea. It is about your mindset in developing your greeting card designs. In this guide, I am going to give you a few “mindset” tips that should help you think differently about your greeting cards and make them more remarkable. It is amazing how thinking of individual aspects of greeting cards can help you make it more special.
* Use a different kind of cover image – Let us start first with the cover image. All of us have a typical ideal of what a cover image for a greeting card entails. For holiday greeting cards, the symbols of that holiday are usually used for the cover. For personal events, we usually have a common idea of the images used for birthdays, anniversaries, get well soon cards etc.
The trick to getting a remarkable custom greeting card is to forget these common image themes for specific events and think of something totally different. So if the event for example is Thanksgiving, instead of the usual turkey references and pilgrims, why don’t you use modern representations of these symbols? Maybe you may want to use a more abstract or more contemporary art style that makes thanksgiving a little bit more cool and hip.
Adding that different element in an image cover for a greeting card can be the key to make it remarkable. Even if it is not a totally original idea, as long as it is different from the common expectations of people, it may just work.
* Explore new types of greeting card configurations – Another way to may custom greeting cards remarkable is to explore new types of greeting card configurations. The typical folded card can actually be improved upon if you like. For example, there are greeting cards out there with extra pages for more messages. Also, there are actually oversized greeting cards that can be really cool and impressive. There are even shaped greeting cards, like circle cards, oblong cards and even weirdly shaped ones like start shaped greeting cards etc. This is a simple idea but by just thinking about different configurations, you can make a custom greeting card look more remarkable.
* Use exotic ink types – You also have the option to use exotic ink types to make your custom greeting cards look remarkable. For example, some greeting cards use exotic “gold type” or “silver type” metallic inks that makes some design elements on the greeting card look like they were made from gold or silver. There are even glittery types of inks with small metallic flecks within them that add a sparkle to the ink. These exotic inks are a great way to add some extra “pizzazz” to your designs that are definitely remarkable for most people. It will add some more to your greeting card printing quotation, but the effect is typically worth it.
Those are just some of the most common tricks you can try out to make your custom greeting cards remarkable. Try these three out and explore other options when possible. Be creative and experimental! It will usually pay off in greeting card printing.

Creating the right kind of “special” custom greeting cards means hitting those right emotional “spots” in your loved ones. The real problem that most people encounter when they do print greeting cards is how to actually hit those emotional spots in their custom designs. Using quotations or popular passages is already getting old and of course, stealing ideas from hallmark cards will just bring a “packaged” and soulless design into your custom greeting cards.
If you really want to hit those special emotional spots in greeting card printing, I recommend that you read through the list below. This list has several proven tips in custom greeting card printing that should help you make your greeting cards more personal, more special and more emotionally powerful. You’ll be surprised as to how easy it is to do.
a. Use custom images with nostalgic value – One of the best and easiest things to integrate into your custom greeting card designs are images with nostalgic value. You real connection with your loved ones is your shared past. By using old and memorable images for the covers of your custom greeting cards you add that touching and nostalgic value to the designs that makes them quite emotionally powerful.
It might be an old image of all of you as kids, or it might be a picture of a memorable moment for all of you. As long as there is a shared past in the image, you will hit the right emotional spots that will make your custom greeting card quite memorable. So try to see if there are past images that might be a great cover for your color greeting cards. Try to scan them up and use them for greeting card printing.
b. Write content that has exclusive meaning to it – Along with nostalgic images, text content can also be used effectively to hit the right emotional spots for your custom color greeting cards. By writing content that has exclusive meaning that only you and your loved ones know about, you basically create a greeting card that is special and unique. Of course only you will know what precise message with exclusive meanings should be put into your greeting cards. My recommendation though is to talk about past moments and conversations that really mean a lot for you and your loved one. By being exclusive with your message, you make the greeting card a lot more personal and emotionally powerful.
c. Bare it all in your writing – Of course, you should also try to be honest with yourself and bare it all in your greeting card writing. Don’t just use packaged quotations or sayings. Bare it all and be truthful with your message. You might not know it, but honesty with your feelings through greeting cards goes a long way in making it special. You don’t need rhymes and fancy words to really touch people with your greeting cards.
d. Customize them for each person you give them to – Finally, you should of course try to customize each of your custom print greeting cards for each person you are giving them to. While you may have a standard image and greeting message for your whole batch of greeting cards, it is important to add more personal elements for each of them to make each card special to the receiver. So after printing all those standard designs and special messages, don’t forget to write in the name and a more personal written message into your custom greeting cards. This gives it the real personal touch that each greeting card needs.
So that is how you hit the right spots in greeting card printing. Just remember the tips above and your custom greeting cards should have the right emotional impact that you want them to have.
