Did you know that Americans buy 7.4 billion greeting cards in a year? And if you apply your calculator to the task, you will be one of Americans who buy 235 cards per second! Not to disparage the greeting card industry or anything, but you can make your own greeting cards, too.

You can make your cards more personalized, which definitely beats buying a store-bought card. Just get your reliable Cross pen and pencils, coloring materials and envelopes, plus a healthy dose of artistic inclination. As for writing the messages, here are a few helpful tips for you.

Write For a Specific Person

You have to express yourself – emotions, angst and passion included – and share yourself with the person you are making the card for. Though expressing yourself can be harder than most other activities, you have the advantage of writing and re-writing your thoughts on paper with your Cross pen.

Unlike the spoken word, the written word can be edited as many times as you like until you come up with the right words. You need to aim for the “right words” rather than the “perfect words” lest you sound too edited and artificial. And do not depend on your Cross pen to do the writing for you either! You have to work on it.

Also, you should take the “me to you” approach in writing your message. For example, writing “I am sorry for hurting you” is way better than “The situation was not in my control and for that, I apologize”. You are asking for a personal apology, not giving a business explanation (which is better covered by a business letter)!

Develop Your Own Writing Style

You can either mimic your favorite greeting card writers’ styles or you can develop your own. The latter is highly suggested for obvious reasons, originality and personalization among them.

Since most greeting cards are written in poetry, you can learn poetry, too. As the movie “Mr. Deeds” showed moviegoers, your first efforts might be funny to some and horrendous to others. But if you keep at it and inject real passion into your verses, you will eventually do it right. Just be sure to keep a handy-dandy paper and your dependable Cross pen to write your thoughts whenever inspiration (or Erato or Polyhymnia or Calliope, all Muses of poetry) strikes.

This begs the question of “to rhyme or not to rhyme?” Depending on your mood and mode, you can actually do both, so long as the emotion is there.

Write Tight

If you will look closely, off-the-rack greeting cards are written tightly. A specific emotion is expressed in a few words but they still pack in a wallop, which you should aim for. When you write tight, you are actually writing in a conventional manner, only very much shorter in content but not in substance.

In short, keep it sweet and short. (And do not include “stupid” because you have to give yourself slack; you are just starting out, after all.)

A birthday party is fun. But it can be an overwhelming experience for a shy child, especially if he or she is the guest of honor. Here are ten tips to make the celebration easy, comfortable and wonderful for your child.

1. Involve him with every aspect of the party planning. When the birthday boy or girl helps plan all the details of the celebration, he feels in control. He will feel comfortable in this situation, because he helped to create it.

2. Have the party at home. No matter how tempting an outside venue may be, a shy child will feel more secure at his house. He’ll be confident in the comfort of familiar surroundings and won’t feel out of place. And, if at any time he feels overly anxious, he can retreat to a safe place for a minute, until he regains his composure.

3. Keep the guest list small. Even fully mature grown ups can sometimes get intimated by large crowds. A houseful of active, noisy kids can make a quiet child feel anxious. Keep the group at a manageable size.

4. Invite the right kids. This is not the time to include newcomers, with the hope of expanding his circle of friends. Stick to those who are already in his comfort-zone, like best friends, siblings, cousins and kids he plays with in the neighborhood. He’ll feel at ease with that group and it will make him more confident.

5. Limit the party length. In this case, less is more. Plan enough time for games, cake and fun. But don’t go overboard. If the festivities go too long and the activities run out, the guests will be restless. They’ll still want to be entertained and your child may not know how to handle them.

6. Include the right games. Look for non-competitive activities everyone can do. Have the kids work on a craft that ties in with the theme of the party. Go for gentle games that don’t require a lot of skill, and reward every participant with a prize. A treasure hunt can be a good idea, if you assign each of the kids a different color and let them search for their own color-coded bounty.

7. Make a plan for blowing out the candles. Some shy kids feel extremely self-conscious when everyone is looking at them and singing happy birthday. They may feel panic-stricken by the time they’re expected to blow out those candles. If your child feels this way, try to make it more low key. You could push the cake table against the wall, position your child in front of the cake, with the rest of the guests in back of him when they sing. Another solution is to have everyone sing really fast. Provide one big candle made in the shape of the number of the year he’s celebrating. It’s easier to extinguish a single candle in the shape of a seven, then seven individual candles.

8. Wait until after the party to open the gifts. If he opens his presents during the celebration, he will be the center of attention. His guests will be watching to see what he gets and his reaction to it. This can be overwhelming for a timid child. Postpone this until later, when the guests have gone home and he’s relaxed. Then, he can unwrap the packages. Don’t forget to take a photo of him playing with, wearing or using the gift to include in the thank you card.

9. Have a helper. Of course, making a birthday party run smoothly is a lot of work. But you don’t want to be so busy and preoccupied that you lose sight of how your shy child is doing. If you have someone there to lend a hand, it will be easier to pay attention to how he’s dealing with things. Then, if you notice signs that he’s feeling stressed, you can divert his attention by asking him to do a simple task. He’ll think that you just needed him to get that bottle of soda out of the refrigerator, and won’t realize that you distracted him, so he would calm down.

10. Don’t worry. There’s nothing wrong with being shy. Most kids grow out of it, as their confidence increases. We all have our moments when we feel self-conscious in social situations. Just do your best to make him feel comfortable, so he can relax and have a good time.

It’s really easy to plan a great birthday party for your shy child. Just take these steps to reduce potential stress triggers and watch him have a happy celebration.

Creating the right kind of “special” custom greeting cards means hitting those right emotional “spots” in your loved ones. The real problem that most people encounter when they do print greeting cards is how to actually hit those emotional spots in their custom designs. Using quotations or popular passages is already getting old and of course, stealing ideas from hallmark cards will just bring a “packaged” and soulless design into your custom greeting cards.

If you really want to hit those special emotional spots in greeting card printing, I recommend that you read through the list below. This list has several proven tips in custom greeting card printing that should help you make your greeting cards more personal, more special and more emotionally powerful. You’ll be surprised as to how easy it is to do.

a. Use custom images with nostalgic value – One of the best and easiest things to integrate into your custom greeting card designs are images with nostalgic value. You real connection with your loved ones is your shared past. By using old and memorable images for the covers of your custom greeting cards you add that touching and nostalgic value to the designs that makes them quite emotionally powerful.

It might be an old image of all of you as kids, or it might be a picture of a memorable moment for all of you. As long as there is a shared past in the image, you will hit the right emotional spots that will make your custom greeting card quite memorable. So try to see if there are past images that might be a great cover for your color greeting cards. Try to scan them up and use them for greeting card printing.

b. Write content that has exclusive meaning to it – Along with nostalgic images, text content can also be used effectively to hit the right emotional spots for your custom color greeting cards. By writing content that has exclusive meaning that only you and your loved ones know about, you basically create a greeting card that is special and unique. Of course only you will know what precise message with exclusive meanings should be put into your greeting cards. My recommendation though is to talk about past moments and conversations that really mean a lot for you and your loved one. By being exclusive with your message, you make the greeting card a lot more personal and emotionally powerful.

c. Bare it all in your writing – Of course, you should also try to be honest with yourself and bare it all in your greeting card writing. Don’t just use packaged quotations or sayings. Bare it all and be truthful with your message. You might not know it, but honesty with your feelings through greeting cards goes a long way in making it special. You don’t need rhymes and fancy words to really touch people with your greeting cards.

d. Customize them for each person you give them to – Finally, you should of course try to customize each of your custom print greeting cards for each person you are giving them to. While you may have a standard image and greeting message for your whole batch of greeting cards, it is important to add more personal elements for each of them to make each card special to the receiver. So after printing all those standard designs and special messages, don’t forget to write in the name and a more personal written message into your custom greeting cards. This gives it the real personal touch that each greeting card needs.

So that is how you hit the right spots in greeting card printing. Just remember the tips above and your custom greeting cards should have the right emotional impact that you want them to have.
